Transitional Justice: The Role of Law in Post-Conflict Societies
Following times of extreme violence, displacement, and mistrust, how do societies rebuild? This presentation takes a look at the uses and limitations of international and domestic law in upholding human rights, reconciling peoples, and establishing stable and just governance. We will follow examples from places like Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and the former Yugoslavia, and pay special attention to how these transitions affect women. Be prepared to think outside the box as we consider what justice looks like in a variety of contexts. Sada Andrews has taught International Law at Cal Poly, has an LLM in Human Rights Law from the University of London and has worked in Kosovo, India, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and other areas.
