Transitional Justice: The Role of Law in Post-Conflict Societies

Following times of extreme violence, displacement, and mistrust, how do societies rebuild? This presentation takes a look at the uses and limitations of international and domestic law in upholding human rights, reconciling peoples, and establishing stable and just governance. We will follow examples from places like Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and the former Yugoslavia, and pay special attention to how these transitions affect women. Be prepared to think outside the box as we consider what justice looks like in a variety of contexts. MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION:
WLA has supported the San Luis Obispo County Mock Trial Competition since its inception. The Competition pairs local high school student trial teams with volunteer attorney and teacher coaches in a mock trial exercise exploring current legal issues in the context of a mock criminal trial. WLA assists the program by helping to defray the costs associated with the program operations.
