September 7 MCLE: Help, I Owe the IRS! A Brief Primer on Resolving Individual Federal Tax Liabilities

Lisa Sperow and Meghann Triplett will explore the different options available to individuals with federal tax liabilities. They will provide an analysis of different strategies and choices people have including working directly with the IRS or filing for bankruptcy to reduce or remove their liabilities.

OUR SPEAKERS:
Lisa Sperow
Lisa Sperow has been the Executive Director of the Cal Poly Low Income Taxpayer Clinic since October of 2012 and teaching at Cal Poly since 2001. Prior to Cal Poly, she was a trial lawyer in DOJ’s Civil Division, Commercial Litigation Branch in Washington, D.C. She currently serves as a consultant for the Small Business Development Center, a Judge Pro Tem for the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court and a Fellow to the American Bar Foundation. She is also a Board Member for Community Action Partnership-SLO, the San Luis Obispo County Mock Trial Committee and the San Luis Obispo County Women Lawyers Association.
Meghann A. Triplett
Meghann A. Triplett is a partner with Margulies Faith LLP. Ms. Triplett specializes in bankruptcy law and business and bankruptcy related litigation. She regularly represents bankruptcy trustees, businesses, creditors, debtors, litigants in bankruptcy adversary proceedings, receivers, those interested in buying assets from bankruptcy and/or receivership estates, financial institutions, as well as assignees for the benefit of creditors. Ms. Triplett has significant experience litigating bankruptcy avoidance actions (including prosecution and defense of fraudulent transfer and preference actions), and in all aspects of bankruptcy reorganization and liquidation including assets sales, claim disputes, relief from the automatic stay, nondischargeability actions, contract assumption and rejection, plan confirmation, cash collateral disputes, mediations, and out-of-court restructuring.
Prior to joining Margulies Faith LLP, Meghann served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Kathleen Thompson (Ret.) and Catherine Bauer (Ret.) of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California. Ms. Triplett received her undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Southern California, and her law degree from Chapman University School of Law.
Meghann is a member of the International Women’s Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation, the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the San Luis Obispo Women Lawyers. She is also the former President of the San Luis Obispo Women Lawyers. Ms. Triplett has been recognized as a “Rising Star” in Super Lawyers magazine every year since 2018.
