Attorneys Maren Hufton and Lisa Sperow will provide an overview of the Freedom of Information Act and the California Public Records Act. They will cover what the laws are, what they cover, and how they can benefit you in your legal practice.


The election of officers for the 2025 WLA Executive Board will also take place at the September 4, 2024, meeting, which shall be designated as the Annual Meeting for Voting Purposes.

OUR SPEAKERS:

Lisa Sperow


 Lisa Sperow has been the Executive Director of the Cal Poly Low Income Taxpayer Clinic since October of 2012 and teaching at Cal Poly since 2001. Prior to joining Cal Poly, she was a trial lawyer in DOJ’s Civil Division, Commercial Litigation Branch in Washington, D.C. She currently serves as a consultant for the Small Business Development Center, Chair of the American Bar Association Pro Bono and Tax Clinic Committee, and a Fellow to the American Bar Foundation. She is also a Board Member for Community Action Partnership-SLO, the San Luis Obispo County Mock Trial Committee, the San Luis Obispo County Bar Association, the Unity Bar of San Luis Obispo County, KCBX Public Radio Station, and the San Luis Obispo County Women Lawyers Association.


Maren Hufton


Maren is the principal attorney at Hufton Law, a general counsel and investigations firm serving businesses, organizations, and leaders throughout California. Since 2019, Maren has balanced legal practice with Higher Education administration in San Luis Obispo, California, leading civil rights, workplace, and whistleblower/retaliation investigations and programs at a major university. A Pepperdine-trained mediator, Maren resolves disputes and can conduct administrative hearings for schools and other organizations and agencies.

Previously a partner at Stradling in Newport Beach, California, Maren represented both private and publicly-traded enterprises and executives facing government inquiries and investigations, litigated complex disputes, and provided strategic corporate counsel and compliance advice.  She defended clients against accusations of fraud, accounting and disclosure, insider trading, FCPA and FCA violations, by a host of agencies and regulators, including both the civil and criminal divisions of the DOJ, SEC, FDA, FCC, and FINRA, as well as the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce, state agencies like the CA Department of Corporations, and state and local law enforcement authorities in California, New York, Florida, and elsewhere. 

Active with the Association of Workplace Investigators and the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics, Maren is a member of the Board of Directors of the Women Lawyers Association of San Luis Obispo, and served as President in 2020.  Maren is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center (FPAC), and served on the Executive Committee as Secretary.
